Inviting to virtual meeting "Cultural Charm" to get acquainted with Russian cultural traditions in Jelgava, on December 17

On Thursday, December 17 at 17.00, the conversations' evening "Cultural Charm" - an online meeting, inviting foreign nationals living in Latvia with their families and representatives of the local community, will take place. During the online meeting the interesents will learn more about the Russian culture, its history and the maintenance of traditions in Jelgava. The virtual meeting will take place on Zoom platform.

The origins of Russian culture in Jelgava started on 9 November 1865, when the Russian club "Kružok" was organised, the founding members of which were merchants, employees of the governorate's chancellery and the Russian army officials. The Russian Community of Latvia was formed in Riga in 1991, while Jelgava formed a section of the Russian Community of Latvia on 14 May 1992, the Chairman of which was Raisa Kozacenko, but the secretary - Mihail Rjabov - both were Jelgava Council councillors at that time. At the time of historically difficult times, the community brought together Russian people, saved and developed Russian language and culture, passed it on to the new generation. Following the re-registration of associations, the Jelgava section of the Russian Community of Latvia became legally and financially independent in 2004 and turned into Jelgava Russian Society "Istok" in 2005. The ensemble "Slavjanočka" was created under the auspices of the society, which still delights listeners and viewers not only in Jelgava, but in whole Latvia and even beyond country borders. Since 2014, the Russian Society of Jelgava "Istok", has been headed by Snezana Zenovjeva. The society "Istok" works successfully with Jelgava Council, the municipal authority "Kultūra" and other public organisations in Latvia and abroad.

In 2018, a children's dance studio "Fresh", a poet association "Egida" and a handicraft club led by L.Rinkuna were established. Since its founding, the Jelgava Russian Society "Istok" has been organizing the Russian Culture Week every year in the city. Although the world has changed in the meantime, traditionally the Russian Culture Week is based on the national values. The Russian Culture Week - it is not just a culturally-historical tradition, but an example of intergenerational inheritance. The events, which take place during this week, help to preserve and develop Russian language and traditions by giving children and grandchildren pride in belonging to the powerful Russian culture. During the 25 years, the Russian Society of Jelgava "Istok" has participated and organised numerous thematic contests and events, including: "Tatiana Day", "The Birth of Christ", "Masļenica", "Silver Age Poetry and Romances", "M.Lermontov Poetry", "In Memory of V.Visocky" ", "Sports Day", "March 8" and many other events.

The event "Cultural Charm" is organised to introduce immigrants with the nations living in Latvia and also to provide the local residents with the opportunity to get acquainted with them, to reveal the most vivid features of other cultures and also the hidden, invisible cultural facets, which would help in mutual integration processes as an educational information. The aim of such conversations' evening is also to ensure the mutual understanding and the development of intercultural dialogue.

On the contents of the event tells the member of "Rāmupe" Gunta Saule: "We are always thinking about our existence on earth, about our life here and now. About its relationship with nature. On the relationship of everyone to nature because we live on nature - our food is of natural origin. August is special in nature and rural life because it already shows what harvest is - we can already see how generous the sun, rain and other natural conditions have been for us. In antiquity, when people were much more dependent on exactly what was growing in the fields, the deities that had been chosen for human support and a source of power, were very important. In our, Latvian, mythical, and spiritual grasp of the world, we can call Māra as a mother of nature. The supervisor of our local world. Māra looks after our lives and health. And after natural life and health. Māra has her cows and her cereal fields. However, Māra also owns forests, meadows, shrubs, the sea, rivers, roads, and everything we are connected with every day. In our lesson, we will talk and sing about Māra and will meet her world."

In order to gain insight into the traditions and cultural characteristics of other nations, the foreigners living in Latvia will be invited to introduce similar deities, paying homage to them in their land and country, or to tell a national tale, saying, belief, or sing a song.

Participation is for free.

We welcome to participate! Number of participants is limited.

By assembling these gorgeous, beautiful little trinkets in an ornamental pattern, a surprise can be obtained - every time a different jewellery. It is a creative process, and the possibility of bringing out new and new ideas is the most binding aspect of embroidering pearls. There are no two equal pieces of hand-made jewellery in the world. In addition, beading is also a great way of forgetting the daily stress and the rush to get to know yourself and your feelings. Many other things could be embroidered - bags, wallets, belt earrings, rings, brooks, cutters, bracelets, etc. There are a lot of opportunities, just let a whale's fantasy and the fun of work.

The project "Integration ABC - 3" starts to get the immigrants to know Latvia's culture and Latvians
    17.08.2019.

In order to promote the inclusion of persons, who are third-country nationals and who are legally residents in Latvia (immigrants) in Latvian society, from August this year until 31st December 2020, the society "Cooperation Platform", in cooperation with the organisation "Shelter "Safe House", is implementing the project "Integration ABC - 3".

The main tasks of the project are to introduce a high-quality integration course programme for immigrants and to organise interactive, educational and mutual awareness-raising measures for representatives of both foreign nationals living in Latvia and the host society. The main activities in the course of the project will be integration courses, the Latvian Colloquial Speech Club, activities promoting intercultural communication, as well as joint and common interest activities under the theme "I and You = We".

The successful integration is possible, if immigrants are given the opportunity to acquire basic knowledge of the history, culture, political situation and institutions of the local community. The participants of the integration courses will explore the fundamental values of Latvia's history and the country, its political system, acquire knowledge of the social, educational and health services system in Latvia and accessibility, will get to know about the situation in the labour market, employment, the opportunities to work or build their own business, as well as knowledge of Latvian culture, traditions and skills in the development of a dialogue. During the free of charge integration courses are planned to train 750 immigrants in the regions of Riga, Zemgale, Kurzeme, Vidzeme and Latgale.

In its turn, the lessons of the Latvian Colloquial Speech Club will be dedicated to strengthen Latvian language skills in an informal and friendly atmosphere, promoting the daily application of language and reducing the speech barrier. The club's activities are also planned in all regions of Latvia.

When introducing immigrants to the culture of Latvian and other peoples living in Latvia, four measures promoting intercultural communication and socialisation will be organised. At the end of this year, the Intercultural Day will take place, in which immigrants, together with representatives of the local community, will be able to become acquainted with the Latvian National Museum of Art and meet in a joint afternoon at a teacup. Next year, one of the world's oldest festivals for spring solstice - NovRouge will be celebrated at the Spring Festival of Friendship. It will be possible to get to know to the Latvian Easter traditions, ancient crafts and cultural and historical heritage on Tradition Day at the Ethnographic Open-Air Museum of Latvia. A diverse programme is also planned in a cycle of events dedicated to Tolerance Day: master classes for getting acquainted with different peoples' cultures, discussions on tolerance, its understanding and examples in everyday life, as well as the concert "Kaleidoscope of Songs and Dances" with the artistic collective participation of Poles, Buryats, Russians and Latvians.

The immigrants will be invited to participate creatively and actively in joint and common interest measures. For example, a small concert programme will be created in Liepaja together with the Austra's children, in Rezekne - a theatrical show, but in Riga a musical show will be created. The meetings at the teacup, joint tours, talking evenings "Cultural Charm", painting lessons, creative workshops and many other activities are also planned.
